Everyone loves the look of a lush, green lawn. Between high water bills, the cost of maintaining your grass, and ongoing applications of fertilizer, not to mention aeration, a good looking lawn can remain costly. In addition to the expense, the frustration of dealing with problems like bare spots, viruses, and seasonal changes in color and quality, many homeowners are rethinking the typical grass lawn. Some have opted for low-water xeriscaping, while others are considering artificial turf from Beach Bum Turf Co. After all, you can achieve the same type of curb appeal with artificial turf, but you never have to water or cut it!

Unfortunately some people are initially turned off to the idea when they find out how expensive artificial turf can be, especially from our competitors. Why does artificial turf cost so much? The answer lies in the installation process. While artificial turf is cheaper to maintain than grass, the installation is always more labor-intensive.

First, all existing sod or soils must be removed. If grading and leveling are needed, those services are performed to ensure a proper surface for your turf. Then a base is created, using a special blend of crushed rock. Depending on where you are located in Florida the base rock can change from #57 stone to 3/8" minus crushed concrete.  This provides the proper drainage your artificial grass will need.  After smoothing and compacting the base, we roll out your artificial turf and seam it together using glue or nails. Then we spread infill material on top of the turf and brush it to the bottom. As you can see, there are multiple steps to this process, but all of this is done to ensure that your artificial turf will last a long time. The base prep is the most important step in a artificial turf installation.

Of course, the cost of the materials themselves can make quite a difference in the total price of installation. Like any other product, the type of turf you choose will depend upon personal preferences, and there is quite a bit of variation in price. Generally speaking, higher-quality, longer-lasting products cost more, but you save money over the long run because you won’t need to have the work redone for quite a number of years.

Considering the extensive installation process, it’s easy to see why artificial turf appears more expensive than a grassy lawn. But, of course, you begin saving on water and maintenance immediately. You won’t be burdened by the price of gas for a lawn mower, and you’ll save money if you used to hire someone to cut the grass for you. For those who spent considerable time maintaining their lawns, just the time savings alone can be quite valuable.

All things considered, the cost of artificial turf is a good investment for many homeowners. For more information, give us a call. We can give you an estimate on artificial turf installation, answer any questions you might have, and help you decide if this is the right choice for you.
